What oil massage is
Unlike traditional Thai massage (done clothed, no oil), here we work directly on the skin with body oil, which allows long, gliding strokes: kneading, palm pressure, sweeping movements. It's the technique closest to what most people picture when they think of "a relaxing massage."
What oils and scents we use
We use a neutral base oil and, if you'd like, add an essential oil: lavender to relax, citrus to feel refreshed, or simply unscented if you prefer neutral skin. Just tell us when you arrive and we'll adapt it. If you have sensitive skin or a known allergy, let us know before we start.
Balinese, Thai Balinese or Thai aroma
Within this group we have three variations with different pressure: Balinese (the gentlest), Thai Balinese (medium pressure, an in-between option) and Thai aroma (similar technique, with more emphasis on the essential oil chosen). If you're not sure which to pick, tell us when booking and your therapist adjusts the pressure to what you need that day.
Why Mantra
A calm studio in the Eixample, by the Sagrada Família, with 4.9 stars and over 370 reviews on Google. Open every day 11:00 to 22:00. If you're not sure which pressure or technique to ask for, our 1-minute online test can guide you before you book.
How to prepare for your visit
If you can, skip moisturiser or perfume right before coming: clean skin absorbs the oil better and we avoid mixing scents. Bring a hair tie if your hair is long, and if you've just had a wax or have an open wound, tell us when you arrive so we can work around it. We provide towels and everything else you need, so there's nothing else to bring. Afterwards, if you'd rather shower before continuing your day, ask us — it's possible at some time slots. With oil on your skin, take it slow getting dressed for the first few minutes so nothing slips.
Who it's for, and who it isn't
It's the best fit if you're after passive relaxation, with no effort or active movement, and you're comfortable being on the skin with oil. If you have very sensitive skin, active dermatitis, or an allergy to plant oils, tell us before we start so we can adapt the product or consider another technique. If you'd rather avoid oil altogether, traditional Thai massage (clothed, no oil) is the natural alternative. During pregnancy, especially the first trimester, check with your midwife or doctor first: for that stage we have a pregnancy massage designed specifically for it.
How it's different from traditional Thai and deep tissue
Here we work on the skin with oil and long, gliding strokes, aiming for passive relaxation from start to finish. Traditional Thai is done clothed, with no oil, combining pressure with active stretching: it's more energising. Deep tissue is also done with no oil but with much more localised, firm pressure on one specific area. If you want to fully disconnect with no effort at all, this is the option; if you want to work a tight area in depth, deep tissue is better.
How often to come back
Many people book it as a monthly ritual of disconnection, with no medical need behind it, simply as regular self-care. Others come in for a specific occasion or after a stressful period. There's nothing wrong with repeating every few weeks if it suits you. We're in the Sagrada Família neighbourhood, a short walk from the basilica, open every day 11:00 to 22:00, so there's usually room that same week.
